MasterClip

The clip editor

Trim a clip, cut parts out by timeline or by text, change its captions and framing, then save and export.

The editor changes where a clip starts and ends, cuts parts out of it, and changes its captions and framing. It is on every plan, and saving costs no credits.

Press Edit on a clip card to open it.

What you can do

  • Trim: drag either end of the clip on the timeline.
  • Extend: the buttons at each end of the timeline add 3 seconds before or after.
  • Split and delete: split the clip at the playhead, then delete the piece you do not want.
  • Edit by text: select words in the transcript and delete them. The video for those words is cut. You can restore them.
  • Captions: pick another caption style or position, turn captions off, or turn the headline or Auto zoom off.
  • Layout and Tracker: choose how the picture is framed.
  • Speech cleanup: find pauses, filler words and bad takes, and remove them.
  • Undo and redo any step.

You can also download the captions as an .srt file from the transcript panel.

Captions show as you choose them

Pick a caption style or a position, or switch the headline, and the video shows it right away. Nothing is saved until you press Save changes.

Every caption style shows this way. A new layout shows only after you save.

Right after a video is made, live captions can take a little while to get ready. The editor says so and turns them on when they are ready.

A clip made before live captions arrived needs about a minute the first time you open it. Until then, changes show after you save.

Layout and Tracker

The buttons above the video set how the picture is framed.

  • Auto: MasterClip picks, moment by moment.
  • Fill: the picture follows the speaker and fills the frame.
  • Fit: the whole picture, with blurred space around it.
  • Tracker off: the picture stays on the middle of the video.

The clip's shape, such as 9:16, is shown beside them. You pick the shape when you submit the video.

Speech cleanup

Press Speech cleanup above the transcript. It lists what it found, and the transcript marks each one.

  • Pauses: silences of half a second or longer are cut down to a short breath. Move the slider to change the length.
  • Filler words: sounds such as um and uh. An older video may show none, because its transcript left them out.
  • Bad takes: lines you started over or said twice. Press Find bad takes to scan the clip. Your first scan is free. After that each scan costs 1 credit, and a scan that fails costs nothing.

Tick the rows you want, then press Remove all. You can undo it, and nothing is final until you save.

Save and export

Save changes makes the clip again on our servers. A box on screen shows the progress until it is done.

Cuts, captions, the headline and Auto zoom are quick: usually under half a minute.

Making the clip longer, or changing its layout or tracker, frames the clip again from the original video. That takes about a minute.

Export downloads the clip. If you have unsaved changes, it saves them first.

Revert to original

After you save an edit, Revert to original appears at the top of the editor. It puts the clip back the way it was first made, right away, and costs no credits.

Limits

The editor saves clips of up to 3 minutes. A longer clip, from a long clip length or from Don't clip, has to be trimmed to 3 minutes or less before you can save an edit.

To make a clip longer, the original video must still be stored. We keep it for 30 days. After that, cuts inside the clip still work.

Keyboard shortcuts

Press the keyboard button in the editor's top bar for the full list. Space plays and pauses, D splits at the playhead, and Ctrl+Z undoes the last step.

Viral Edit from the editor

The Viral Edit tab on the right starts a Viral Edit of the clip. Save your changes first. See Viral Edit.
